Description
A deeply introspective and evolving character whose life story is defined by themes of redemption, identity, love, and perseverance. Born into hardship and shaped by loss after loss, Casey’s journey explores his transformation from a troubled past into a life of healing and service.
Early Life
Casey's Early Life
Casey Jackson was born to a Native American father and an English mother. Their marriage, though likely fraught with cultural challenges in the era, brought Casey into the world. Tragedy struck early, as his father passed away when Casey was only four years old. Struggling to care for him, Casey’s mother gave him over to the church, where he was raised under its strict, often rigid, environment.
When Casey reached an age deemed suitable for labor, he was sent to work on a horse ranch. Instead of finding a home, he encountered abuse and turmoil. This environment, coupled with his early loss and lack of familial guidance, likely contributed to his later struggles with belonging and self-worth.
1902 - Early Life and Crime
Deadcrow Ranch: Casey begins his journey in 1902 at Deadcrow, working alongside Hoof, Nash, and Chris, who serve as father figures in their own ways. For the first several months, Casey works the ranching life. However, after two weeks, crime strikes the area, robbing Casey of his sense of security and leaving him feeling unsettled.
Meeting June: It is during this period that Casey meets June at the mines in a chance encounter. Their friendship grows quickly, and Casey becomes deeply fond of her. He follows her to the Prescott ranch, where he begins working part-time.
Joining the Prescott Gang: As Casey’s feelings for June deepen, they consume him. His love for her leads him to push for a place in the Prescott gang, which includes Scarlett, Violet, June, Thomas Prescott, Tress, and Armando, among others.
Imogene Harrison: During his time with the Prescott gang, Casey Jackson forms a deep, non-romantic bond with Imogene. Although he loves her, their relationship never crosses into romance. Instead, Imogene becomes like an older sister to him through the years, all the way to 1904.
Offering emotional support, wisdom, and guidance, her steady presence in his life helps him navigate his journey toward redemption, providing the sense of familial connection and stability he has longed for. Imogene plays a key role in Casey’s growth, helping him come to terms with his past and stay focused on his path to healing.
Turning More to Crime
Leaving June: After eventually leaving June after the Prescott trials and the gang is no more. Casey spirals into a life of crime on the road, driven by heartbreak and a desire to escape his emotional turmoil. He travels to Texas and turns to robbing trains, stores, banks, where his name begins to grow infamous, at least in Texas.
Trial and Imprisonment
Caught and Convicted: Casey’s criminal activities eventually catch up with him. He is arrested after a robbery, and during his trial, the lawmen testify that although he robbed the train, he didn’t kill the lawman when given the chance. This leniency leads to a reduced sentence, and he is sentenced to one year of hard labor, where he must work to repair the very rails he once targeted.
Reflecting in Prison: During his imprisonment, Casey has time for deep self-reflection. His time behind bars becomes a turning point where he begins to wrestle with his actions, particularly the pain he caused June. He vows to change but is unsure of how to begin.
1903 - Gateway Ranch and Redemption
Joining Gateway Ranch: After his release, Casey drifts, eventually finding a new purpose at Gateway Ranch. He starts working as a healer, and over time, he dedicates himself to learning the craft fully. Eventually, he becomes a full doctor, embracing a life of service to others and finding his chosen family, including Jackie Lumbar, Mable Shepard, Thomas Shepard, Jesse Wolfpike, Samantha Wolfpike, Keith Montgomery, Clayton Anderson, Lillian Anderson, Billy Butters, Frank Farmer, and Imogene Harrison.
Meeting Clara: At Gateway Ranch, Casey meets Clara Ambrose, a kind and energetic woman with a love for books and sunflowers. Their relationship begins to blossom, and for a time, Clara represents the possibility of redemption and a fresh start for Casey beyond what he has started with the ranch. He finds peace in her presence, which is rare for him. Though his past continues to haunt him.
Breakup and Exile
Breaking Up with Clara: Despite their deep bond, Casey's unresolved grief and internal conflict strain his relationship with Clara. Fearing that his past might hurt her and unable to reconcile his emotions, the relationship ends. The breakup devastates Casey, and he retreats inward, questioning his worth and future.
Exile: Overwhelmed with grief, Casey chooses self-imposed exile. He sails away on the SS St. Louis, heading toward Guarma, where he isolates himself further. On the island, Casey struggles physically with fever and infection, while emotionally he faces the darkest parts of his past. He reflects on his lost love with Clara, the mistakes he made, and the unresolved pain that still holds him captive.
Turning Himself In
Facing His Past: After months of isolation and self-reflection, Casey makes the difficult decision to confront his past. He turns himself in for the crimes he committed while part of the Prescott gang—crimes that the law had no knowledge of. This is a pivotal moment in his journey of redemption.
Sisika Prison: He serves several months in Sisika prison as part of his commitment to right his wrongs and fulfill the promise he made to Clara. This time in prison represents Casey’s reckoning with his past and a step toward healing, both physically and emotionally.
Present Life
1904 and Guarma
Marking the New Year: After his time in exile and imprisonment, Casey finds himself marking the start of 1904 on the Isle of Guarma. He continues his work as a healer, providing medicine to those in need. However, his heart remains conflicted, navigating the painful remnants of his past, especially his love life and the weight of the mistakes he has made.
Inner Struggle: As Casey continues to heal others, he also struggles with his own heart, uncertain about his future and how to reconcile his desire for redemption with the emotional scars he carries. The new year symbolizes both the continuation of his journey and the painful realization that the path to true healing is not yet complete.
