Jessamine is a cheerful, friendly member of New Alexandria - known for being rather curious and going to speak to strangers if she's never met them before. She tries to understand every person she meets, often to her own detriment. This has brought her friends from all over state; criminals, law, and civilians alike.
She is most recognizable by her wild red hair and the deep green clothes she tends to favor.
Early Life
Jess was born in Boston in 1880, to Emily and Matthew Eaton. The first of four, she and her siblings lived a comfortable life in the city. Her father was a doctor, and later, a respected and sought-after surgeon. In those younger years she was doted on by her mother and chased after the precious moments with her father when he wasn't working. She and all of her siblings had a big house to play in, a beautiful garden overlooking the sea, and never wanted for food or clothing or shelter.
As she got older, Jess became more curious about the world outside her own little bubble. While her father preferred that she and her sisters remain at home, she took every excuse to wander the city and meet people. Her access to education made it fairly easy to find a position as a schoolteacher and she spent several years doing just that, despite any protests from her family. Her father allowed it for a while- albeit unwillingly - as each birthday passed and she pushed harder against the boundaries containing her. This eventually led to a series of arguments, during which she took what little money she'd made teaching and bought a train ticket. She bid her sisters farewell, told her parents nothing, and got on a train to New Alexandria.
Present Life
1903
Upon her arrival in the summer of 1903, Jess spent her first few months in and out of state. She had a brief encounter with an unknown gang in her first few days, but beyond that, didn't see many people. Tex Underwood and Ezekiel DeWitt were the first two people she properly met; they gave her advice, food, and an offer of a job at Dead Crow in New Austin. It wasn't until much later she heard from them again, once Zeke was released from Sisika after his trial.
Her early days were spent with these two - mostly Zeke - riding about the west and getting to know each other. It was then she expressed an interest in becoming a medic. Through him she was introduced to Imogene Harrison-Fitzroy, the governor at the time, and was kindly introduced to several of the state's best doctors. During this time she also met Kitty Sawyer and Marric Warkan.
1904
In the early months of 1904 Jess focused on trying to train under doctors as a state medic, hoping to be more helpful within the community. She also dreamed of bringing life back to the west; with the arrival of her childhood friend, Lilith Lovelock, came dreams of a bakery set up in Armadillo next to the Carrion's Rest. During this time she got to know Tobi McBide and Haley Myers better, hunting outside of Blackwater with them when she wasn't out west with the rest of the group.
While all this was happening, there was an underlying tension. She'd been made aware of some of the things Zeke had done - mostly by him - and grew suspicious that there might've been something else about to happen when several of them started asking her about Summit Finch. She confided to Lilith about this and it was what led to the standoff in Carrion's Rest as well as Lilith and Marie being chased from the west and forced to seek refuge. As for herself, while not ever directly involving herself in the conflict, Jess fled west too. She spent that time living with Haley and Emily in the hayloft of the Valentine barn.
In her time East, Jess began forming bonds with more people and working towards actually obtaining her medical license. She spoke with and assisted Elinor Doyle, Ryker Dawson, Casey Jackson, and Apollo Alovitch at times. She also learned through her own research, sifting through every book she could find and writing letters to her sisters to mail her specific ones from her father's collection.
Jess was accused of giving information about Casey to the law while he was acting as a vigilante and committing crimes. Previous experience had her believing she would be unharmed and she lashed out in response to his telegram, telling him that his sister deserved better than what he was doing. His response was simply that he'd be seeing her soon. She confided this to Jenny Hale, who informed Ian York. While both took it more seriously as an actual threat, Jess still believed that he was still the same man who'd stitched up her friend at Gateway Ranch, and that he'd only threaten her verbally but not harm her.
While at the tailor's in Valentine, Casey and Freya Greyfield held her at gunpoint and forced her onto their horses. She was taken to Armadillo where she was made to choose a casket, locked into it, and driven the the graveyard outside of town. It was there he forced her to dig her own grave. Convinced that he was going to kill her, she spoke to him very bluntly, bringing up Imogene to him again. She was shot in the knee for it and left in the graveyard, barely managing to drag herself to Armadillo where she was found by Brooklynn Moore.
She spent the next month and a half recovering in the city, where Apollo operated on her to repair her shattered knee. She struggles with chronic pain due to the injury, even after it healed, and walks with a limp. This experience was also what left her with an overwhelming fear of enclosed spaces.
After her injury Jess moved more permanently to the west again, staying at Redstone Ranch.
Though terrified of him, Jess asked to speak to Casey when they all ran into each other at Emerald station. The two had a mutual connection, Vicky Merryweather, and she knew that Vicky hated how badly things had gone between them. They agreed to put it behind them for Vicky's sake. Slowly, over time, she began to trust him again; allowing him to look at her stitches, spending time at his ranch talking with him and Vicky, and even seeking medical advice as she continued training. Despite everything prior, she considers him a friend and a good man.
Tobi McBide
While never officially together, the two spent every day together for a long time. He'd often refer to her as his wife - a joke, referencing the many women he tended to pursue - but when things with the group got tense, they did genuinely grow closer. The two would daydream over letters about a little ranch; space for cows, chickens, a kitten curled asleep in a bed. Eventually she realized that to have the life she'd want with him, either he'd have to give up what he had with the Spades or she'd have to give up the friends and family she'd made. Over mutual agreement they ended whatever it was between them and grew more distant as she spent less time with the Spades.
Cooper Riley
After her move back west, she and Cooper became closer. He'd always been someone she could talk to, tending to view things through the same lens as her, and it was natural that they were the two who wanted as little conflict as possible out west. To her surprise he asked if they could spend time together as more than friends. Jess was all in it from the beginning; she admired his strength and kindness in the face of so much heartbreak, and felt he was a safe person to go to at the end of some of her long, difficult days.
She lived at Crimson Rock with him for a time. However, as tensions increased between the Hallocks and the west, he told her he wanted to break things off for fear of getting her tangled up in all of it or putting her in danger. While she was hurt at first, she managed to reconcile with her feelings and stay friends with him. She still considers him to be a close friend and goes to him when she needs to talk her way through something.
Jackson Linder
While they'd had mutual friends before, the two of them (trauma) bonded when involved in a train crash together.

Trivia
Jess loves horses, and has purchased more than her fair share.
Current horses Bunny - A white and chesnut Gypsy Cobb, and the very first horse Jess ever purchased in state. She was named for the way she hops when she gets excited. Apollo - A grey mustang, given to her by Zeke. In her mind, he's a symbol of the west - the place she's drawn to no matter how many times she tries to leave it. Renee - A cremello Dutch Warmblood, purchased specifically to act as a medical horse when she's doing search and rescue. Impulse - A buckskin mustang, named for the reason he was purchased.
Impulse's strange behavior after she purchased him prompted her to hand him over to Cyril, who she'd seen communicate fairly well with animals up to that point. The two spent a good amount of time together before Cyril informed her that Impulse was not a horse, but a human who'd been transformed into a horse. According to Cyril, he was a French man named Larry who'd been married and had children, but seemed to prefer life as a horse.
Godiva - A chocolate roan Dutch Warmblood, purchased from a woman who was going blind and no longer needed another horse.
Past horses Alma - A sweet black shire, Jess gave Alma away to James Lin after realizing she might not be the best fit to be a medical horse, due to her speed. Chapel - A cremello and white Gypsy Cobb, this horse was loaned to a woman named Helena in Blackwater. When Jess saw how well the two got along, she decided to let her keep Chapel.
