    Description

    Early Life

Johan Espeland was born in Victoriahavn, Norway, a rugged northern port town where the sea and unforgiving winters shaped the lives of its people. Raised in a household with four siblings, life was a constant struggle, demanding resilience and hard work. From a young age, he learned to hunt and fish alongside his father, skills necessary to keep food on the table.

At 18, Johan was conscripted into the Norwegian military, where he served two years in the Royal Norwegian Navy (Marinen). During his service, he gained experience in seamanship, discipline, and combat training before transitioning to the reserves while continuing his civilian life. His family had deep roots in the shipping trade, with his grandfather, a respected merchant, operating in Oslo’s bustling harbors. As the eldest son, Johan was expected to carry on the family legacy, mastering navigation, trade, and shipbuilding.

At 25, his grandfather offered him an opportunity—to travel to America and help expand their business. Seeing it as a chance to prove himself, Johan eagerly accepted. However, upon arriving in New York, their ambitions crumbled. A disastrous business deal left them in ruin, drowning in debt. Betrayed and disillusioned by the ruthless world of commerce, Johan faced a choice: return home in disgrace or forge his own path.

He chose the latter, disappearing from his old life. He drifted westward, taking odd jobs as a dockhand, fisherman, and laborer, constantly on the move. Now, at 27, he seeks a fresh start in the state of New Alexandria. And is aiming to stay away from trouble...

    Present Life

When Johan Espeland first stepped off the train into New Alexandria, he looked completely out of place. A young man from the north of Norway, lost in more ways than one. He wandered through the streets of Valentine, not knowing north from south, confused by the dust, the noise, and the pace of this strange new land. He had no plan—only a little coin in his pocket and a name that didn’t mean much here.

Fate, however, has a strange way of sending the right people when they’re needed most. Luke Devos was the first. A quiet gesture—a Gypsy Cob named Hamish, gifted without expectation—became Johan’s first real companion in the state. From there, he scraped by on odd jobs, hauling goods, helping ranchers, doing what he could to keep moving forward.

Things shifted when Johan met Timothy O’Boyle, who gave him his first real opportunity: working as a brewer for Little Timmy’s. It was honest work, and it grounded him. He stayed out of trouble, kept his head down, and helped where he could, slowly building trust with those around him.

Later, Johan joined a private security firm, and it was there he met Jane Bell. At first, she was just a colleague. But over time, something familiar began to build—trust, laughter, the kind of connection that didn’t need to be spoken to be understood. The firm eventually dissolved, but the connection remained.

Johan joined the bounty hunters, and not long after, he ran into Jane again—now a deputy. They picked up where they left off, working side by side with Logan Clay and Luke Devos, forming a tight crew. Together, they were unstoppable—tracking fugitives, protecting towns, and building a bond that ran deeper than work.

In time, Johan and Jane grew closer. He asked for her hand, and she said yes. For a moment, everything seemed right. Johan began training as a field medic, working cattle and land, and living the kind of life he never thought he’d have.

    Then came the telegram.

“Doctors needed in Strawberry – GSW.”

Something in his gut twisted. He rode hard, fearing what he already knew. Jane had been killed in the line of duty.

Grief swallowed him. But then came a name on a bounty poster—the man responsible. Johan hunted him down and took his revenge. But when it was done, he didn’t feel better. He felt empty. And that’s when he made a promise: to stay on a better path. To be the man Jane believed he could be.

So he kept riding. Kept working. And time went on. People left. Some died. Friends became memories, and the weight grew heavier.

Until one day, in the Valentine telegram station, Johan met Beatrice Fairchild. He didn’t expect anything—just the comforting smell of fresh bread and pastries as he stepped inside. But that scent… it stopped him. Something shifted. Something softened.

He started spending more time with her. Helped her get her footing in the state. Taught her to use a bow, helped her buy a horse she named Chocolate Coffee, after a strange drink Johan once promised he could make. He showed her the mountains, the valleys, the quiet corners of the state that meant something to him.

And on April 19th, Johan told her the truth—that he had feelings for her.
And on April 29th, Johan asked her to be his.

Not because he was chasing some dream. But because, despite everything, his heart had found its way again.

From the icy shores of Norway to the wild frontier of New Alexandria, through loss, hardship, and healing, Johan Espeland became something more than a bounty hunter. He became a man who still believed in second chances. A man who kept riding, even with the weight. And a man who, one quiet day, found something worth holding onto again.
