Description 

The face of the young charlatan glows with polite cheerfulness so well-simulated that it could confuse the most watchful eye.

He is a slender boy, with a swarthy face ornamented with a light tash, golden earrings and a faint scar across his left eye.
Strands of randomly plaited caramel hair, drop on his forehead as a mane above a strong brow.

A sharp nose, with narrow nostrils and a set of white teeth, shining at every smile give his face a slight wolfish expression; but as a whole he is a model rebel; full of charm, character and defiance.

Early Life 

Joe was born József Henry Faragó on December 18th 1877 in Nagyvárad, Austria-Hungary.
His father, Lajos Faragó, was a carpenter of Hungarian descent while his mother, Anna, hailed from Kraków, Lesser Poland, which became part of Austria-Hungary following the partitions of Poland in the late 18th century.
Following the death of her husband, Anna and her son emigrated to United States in 1885, with no money and little English.

She quickly found work as a shopkeeper in New York City, and in 1886, she married the Jewish American shop owner, Avram Rubinstein. József never adopted Rubinstein's surname, only anglicized his own to Joseph H. Farago.

After moving again a few years later to Washington D.C., Anna fell sick and eventually died of tuberculosis. Joe's stepfather, Avram, had no intentions of raising a child and abandoned the boy leaving him orphan.

Farago fled the Washington City Orphan Asylum as a teenager, and while working on a dairy ranch, befriended an Irish gypsy, Michael "Mickey" McDonagh . Two months later the two were caught stealing food and booted out. The pair subsequently grew close and worked together on several ranches in West Virginia and Ohio before, in 1896 they met and joined a group of Irish Travellers.
