    Early Life

    EARLY LIFE

Lucio Barbareschi was born in 1874 in the bustling city of Brooklyn, New York. The son of two Italian immigrants, Lucio experienced harsh discrimination growing up. As a result, Lucio stuck to other fellow Italian Americans in school. He was frequently made fun of for his short height. He quickly picked up on the schemes the other kids would run, hatching plans to coax money out of wealthy men.

At the age of 11 he had to leave school due to the death of his father, Pasquali. Lucio had to take on a job to help support his mother, Sofia, and his three younger siblings, Luca, Andrea, and Edoardo.

He found employment at his local grocer, Delino's Deli, as a stock boy for the owner, Martin Delino. He continued to work there for years growing close with Martin and earning promotions, but always left room to make some extra cash on the side selling stolen goods from the deli for cheaper prices.

    THE YEAR 1899

The year 1899 was cruelly harsh for Lucio and his family. In the Springtime, his youngest brother Luca came down with tuberculosis. He died at the age of 11 after a three-week battle. During that time, his mother Sofia lost her job at the textile factory because of her frequent absence trying to take care of her dying son.

Come summer, Sofia was lost in a depressive state, and would soon succumb to alcohol poisoning. Andrea and Edoardo moved in with their aunt, inn upstate New York. Martin, the Deli owner also met his end. He was found dead in the streets by local police, stabbed multiple times, presumably mob related. The deli went of of business weeks later.

Lucio tried to find work in other places, but was always turned down due to his status as an Italian. Lucio was left with nothing to show for himself and no way to support Andrea and Edoardo.

    A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

For years Lucio had seen stories in the papers about people making fortunes out in the American West. And finally, one morning in the fall, he saw a New York Journal report of endless rivers of gold and unlimited opportunity.

Lucio hatched a plan: Make money out west, and send some back home to his family. At the age of 26, with a fistful of coins and the clothes on his back, he made his way out by train to the great state of Lemoyne.
