Description
Little Threads
The Yarnlings are a whimsical, playful gang of storytellers, crafters, and mischief-makers. Recognizable by their colorful, mismatched patchwork clothing adorned with yarn, knots, and handmade charms, they treat the world as a vast tapestry of scraps and stories, finding joy and meaning in even the smallest or most discarded objects. They collect scraps from markets, harbors, and alleys, turning metal bits, cloth, driftwood, and other cast-offs into toys, charms, practical tools, or intricate works of art.
While fundamentally joyful and creative, the Yarnlings are also known to commit minor crimes, often carried out in a mischievous or playful spirit. They might take shiny trinkets, buttons, or scraps from others, not out of greed, but to repurpose them into something new or to teach a lesson. Their mischief can include pranks, playful chaos, or harmless acts of “justice,” such as leaving wooden coin replicas for greedy merchants or tying sailors’ boots together for a laugh. Even their thefts are often accompanied by a whimsical gesture, like a small charm or note, signaling that the act is more playful than malicious.
Despite this, the Yarnlings are deeply community-oriented, holding storytelling circles, festivals, and craft sessions that celebrate creativity, gratitude, and resilience. They view hardships and mistakes as stitches in life’s greater tapestry, and their philosophy emphasizes that everything, even scraps and chaos, can be transformed into joy and wonder. To outsiders, they may appear as childish pranksters or eccentric dreamers, but those who see past their playful exterior recognize the Yarnlings as inventive, resilient, and surprisingly wise guardians of creativity, laughter, and the magic hidden in ordinary things.
History
Start of the Whimsy Cult, 1904
With a spark of mischief in her eye and a heart full of dreams, Waverly West began to put her grand plan into motion. She envisioned a place where scraps could be transformed into treasures, where laughter and stories held as much value as gold, and where even the smallest acts of creativity could weave a mark upon the world. Determined to gather dreamers, mischief-makers, and storytellers alike, she set out to create a whimsical cult unlike any other, a community of playful, inventive souls bound together by yarn, knots, and the joy of shared adventure. Thus, the Yarnlings were born, a mischievous yet inspiring society dedicated to turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, and to leaving a trail of color, chaos, and stories wherever they go.
The Yarnlings got it's first members on the same day it was founded, a man who doesn't share his name and is simply refereed to as "Contractor" or Knot as he was named by Waverly. And two others, Billy Wyatt and Sophia Quill. Though Billy and Sophia are more like honorary members. Isla Irwin, Waverly's first friend in the state also became a Yarnling.
The Big Ball Waverly made the decision to move the cult of Yarnlings out West, to Armadillo to be specific. She found a building and declared it to be the secret hideout of the Yarnlings. She decorated it with tons of yarn, marbles and other charms.
