Hi all,
I am here to provide you all some additional insight and updates to what has been going on with the server in the past 24 hours. Last last night (August 17th) we became the target of a severe DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. I want to stress that we do not know who is behind these attacks and urge users to not make any assumptions about who it may be. We're all in this boat regardless of who is doing it.
This DDoS attack has caused numerous connection issues to both Teamspeak and the RedM Servers. The truth is - We've been getting DDoS'd for months, at an almost daily rate, but users never feel it because we do have a good DDoS mitigation network, which unfortunately was not up to the task of filtering this one out.
So what's the solution?
I have been working with @Ty Byrne since the beginning of the attacks to determine our best course of action moving forward. We both agreed that the best thing to do is to change our hosting provider and upgrade our DDoS mitigation capabilities. This means we will be switching hosting providers and our server rental expenses will increase by nearly 40% - That being said, we have significant cash reserves and the health of the community is worth every penny of moving to a new host.
What does this mean for users?
While we may have a short downtime outage while we transfer all of our servers to the new host, users will experience no significant differences. There will not be a wipe or any changes like that. Everything will remain the same in-game. The time-frame for this transfer is within the next 24-48 hours, and we will announce on this thread, in Discord, and on Twitter when the downtime will be a few hours ahead. We are working as fast as we can and we have ordered the new server anyways.
Why the sudden move?
While I think that this set of attacks will subside when whoever is attacking us gets bored of doing so, there is a possibility of this type of thing happening again in the future. While the current host is fine for our purposes and has served us well for the past 8+ months, the risk of having the servers be interrupted over a multi-day period is not something we are okay with. Our new hosting provider should provide us much better coverage than we currently have and are more apt to working with us to correct issues as they happen, compared to our current provider. While we may see attacks get through in the future, we should be better equipped to respond to them and mitigate the attack methods, whereas with the current host we are limited on our ability to do so.
As a final note, I want to thank you all for your patience during this. Obviously this is not something any of us want to happen - but we will address it and move forward as a community in a transparent way.
Thank you,
Hayes / Management.
