Description
The first thing everyone notices about Jackie is her height, as she defines standing out in a crowd. Despite her 6’5” height, her frame is thin and lean, while when visible, what meat on her looks to be all lean muscle. She has dark, nearly black, hair and green hazel eyes. Her lips are never far away from a smile, and she tends to never stay still, whether it’s fidgeting with her hands or simply walking around. She might seem to be quiet and reserved around those unknown to her, but otherwise her bubbly personality is not far behind the smile.
Early Life
Jackie was born to Jacqueline and Benjamin Lumbar on a small homestead southwest of Valentine, Nebraska. Her mother and father had settled there twenty years prior, building up a sod home, cultivating the land around enough for crops, and raising goats to sell in the spring stockyard auctions in town. They had hoped for a child for years upon years, with that hope nearly gone once they both reached their forties. It came much to their ecstatic surprise when they learned they were expecting, and just after the new year in 1877, Jackie came into the world in midst of a ravaging blizzard. Unfortunately, that joy turned into despair when her mother, exhausted from so many hours of labor at her advanced age, passed in the hours after she was born.
After the death of his wife, Benjamin chose to name the newborn after her in her memory. Jackie grew from that happy baby into a fearless, carefree child. She learned to tend the farm and enjoyed taking care of the goats the most. It took several harsh seasons, but her father’s eyes glistened with tears the first year she successfully grew her own garden. It reminded him so much of his late wife who had kept that garden for so many years.
Her schooling involved tending animals, hunting, fishing in the nearby Snake River, and gardening; never learning to read and write as she never had the need. Her life growing up was picture perfect despite the rough land she lived in. The spring of Jackie’s 24th year, her now elderly father finally succumbed to a cough that pestered him all winter. He passed with a smile with Jackie at his side.
The next year, Jackie tried to live alone on the homestead. She managed, but the loss of her father, with no family, left her lonely. Her father, “Pop” as she always called him, had told her upon the last days, before his voice failed him, “Don’t be sad for me, little bird, but open your wings and fly to new places.” That memory resonated after a year of loneliness and she took her old horse, Pops, and set off.
Present Life
It took a while, but Jackie eventually found a boat to a place called Blackwater. It was a massive town to her since Kearney, at half the size, was the biggest town she'd been to. She saw a garden near the stables, and befriended the lady who owned it when she caught her tending it one day. From then on, Jackie stayed under an overhang in the back unless it was storming. After a few days, with Pops rested up from the boat ride and long travels, she got an axe and headed to the nearby lumbering area. That's where she met what she later found out was a gang.
The Ashen, she later found out, ended up helping her by giving her a sharp knife to replace the old one she brought from home and a sidearm, once she's carried for months since that meeting. She respected Jethro from that day forward.
With her sidearm at the ready, she was confident to venture past the fields between Beecher's Hope and Blackwater, and set out towards MacFarlane's ranch as she heard there was horse adoptions and checkups going on. Initially, she was going to have Pops looked over, but somehow she ended up leaving there with a new horse named Orphie and a job as a stable hand working three days a week.
As time went on, she made close friendships with Billy Butters,
Thomas Bowdre, and Franklin Longmire. She had moved over to Rosewood for a while, enjoying the hay deliveries and finding a passion for cattle drives. When Sentinel Ranch took over the space where she worked, she was hired on there as well, becoming lead ranch hand there. Eventually, she settled in at Gateway Ranch under who had become like a father to her, Franklin.
She and Billy Butters grew close, with both of their wild natures coming together perfectly, and soon they were engaged. For a good while they stayed in room 1A in the Valentine Hotel, well known as "The Schmudders" room. When their good friend Thomas moved to the nearby ranch, they moved over there, taking over the loft above the stables, where they currently reside.
For now, she has found a home and a family. She visits Nebraska often, bringing Billy there, who is the life of the party in Valentine, but she's happy and content in New Alexandria.
