Description
James Briggs is a lowly English canal boat pilot turned businessman, investor and born opportunist. He is a savvy investor, with an ambitious nature and a passion for honest business. Briggs has set his sights on the transport industry since founding his stagecoach company in January of 1900. He is currently the sole owner and founder of the Southern Transport Union, as well as being a joint share holder in The New Alexandria Lottery Commission alongside fellow entrepreneur, Henry Stowe.
Early Life
James Briggs was born in Bristol, England on February 14, 1865 to Arthur and Mary Briggs. He began working on his fathers canal barge as a boy, quitting school at the age of 12. At aged 19 he purchased his own barge that he named the Elizabeth Rose, believed to be named after his childhood sweet-heart, although Briggs only received half of the profits as they were split with his father. He began his business by ferrying goods and passengers from the port of Bristol up and down the Kennet and Avon Canals into London, although after three short years Briggs sold the barge as the decline of maritime trade was met by the rise of the railroad lines between Bristol and London.
In 1887 James joined the flood of immigrants making their way to America, made easier by the invention of larger steam-powered oceangoing ships that replaced sailing ships at the time. Briggs made his way for the American West, where he believed he would seize a business opportunity.
Present Life
After spending several years West, Briggs moved East to New Alexandria where he began work for the Jameson Mine and Coal Company. After a few short months, Briggs purchased his own stagecoach and set out on his own, founding the Briggs Overland Stagecoach Company. The company now employs several others who provide transport services overland or by water, through the newly founded Briggs Eastern Steamboat Company under the umbrella of the Southern Transport Union. Briggs is currently the only director and with the rapid growth of his transport empire he has fallen into a backseat administration role within the business. He is often found in Saint Denis sending letters and telegrams or meeting with other business figureheads and state representatives alike. However, on occasion Briggs can still be found driving his coach along the stage lines or steamboat across Flat Iron Lake. Briggs has built his overland stagecoach company into a transportation giant with the recent founding of the Southern Transport Union, moving the companies operations into the freight and maritime industries respectively. He invests heavily into smaller enterprises and good causes, and is also a joint share holder of The New Alexandria Lottery Commission alongside newspaper publisher, Henry Stowe after the duo entered into a business partnership in mid February, 1900.
By mid 1900 Briggs moved back to England allowing the union to be controlled by a board of management. Though he resides over the union as chairman.
