Description
Smartly dressed (in his own opinion) and well-manicured mustache with dusty circular spectacles resting on the high bridge of his nose, Thomas Bowdre’s appearance may look tidy and regimented, but the man himself is often seen engaging in a giddy foolishness.
Early Life
Thomas was born to James and Bertha Bowdre, the oldest son of the Bowdre boys. He was somewhat the wild card of the brothers. Catching crawdads, hunting for turtles, and collecting crocodile eggs for fun with his younger brother were passions in his youth. As he matured into a young man, he put those skills to use as a trapper in the swampland until his father forced him to set aside his passion for the family business of making and distributing corn mash moonshine.
Years of learning the moonshine trade at his father's demand wore on Thomas. His passion for the trade was menial at best. He educated himself with books he bought in secret, attempting to better himself and his younger sibling, which was deeply against his father’s wishes. Thomas's father was a drunkard and abusive, with great cruelty and violence erupting with little to gain his ire. Thomas, being the older brother, tried his best to always protect his younger brother Jedd, especially against their father's wrath.
One night, in a drunken rage, his father attacked Thomas with a fire axe. Mid-swing, he tripped, causing the axe to split the skin of Thomas's forehead, leaving a permanent scar but not cracking his skull. Thomas nearly died from infection but saved his own life using knowledge from a medical text he had read, keeping the wound clean and drinking bone broth and willow bark tea.
Thomas’s life changed forever when he and Jedd had to make a delivery to their uncle in the next town over because their father had drunk himself unconscious. During the journey, the sheriff of Woodruff County and his posse fired a warning shot at the two. In the ensuing chase through the swampland countryside, Thomas pushed Jedd to spare him the punishment about to befall him. Thomas moved the wagon into a clearing and surrendered. The sheriff decided to make an example of James’s eldest son by sentencing Thomas to eight years of hard labor in the County Penitentiary at only 25 years old. The experience robbed Thomas of his last vestiges of youth and much of his innocence.
After he was released from prison, he found out his father, James, was dead. A shadow of pain and suffering lifted from Thomas with the news. His younger brother Jedd wrote to him, inviting him to come find him in the state of New Alexandria. Thus, his new life began as he set off to join his brother.
