Description
Whelan Wodehouse was born into a life of privilege and responsibility as the only son of the affluent Wodehouse family, known for its old-money status and tightly woven connections within England’s social elite. As a young man, he was groomed to follow in his family's footsteps, carrying their name and fortune with honor. However, Whelan’s independent spirit clashed with the rigid expectations of his upbringing. While his family valued tradition and control, Whelan longed for freedom and resented the constraints imposed upon him.
In 1888, at just eighteen, Whelan found himself trapped in an arranged marriage to Edith Fitzroy, a woman whose personality contrasted sharply with his own. Edith was an iron-willed and calculating woman with a taste for control—a trait that might have made her a perfect partner in the eyes of Whelan’s family but was a nightmare for him. As a man with a fierce dislike for domination, Whelan felt suffocated in the marriage, his resentment only intensifying with every controlling decision Edith made. Despite his animosity, he kept up appearances, knowing full well that any scandal could taint his family’s pristine image.
Seeking an escape, Whelan enrolled at Cambridge University, where he pursued chemistry, drawn to the field’s promise of discovery and independence. Yet his academic pursuits couldn’t fill the void within him. Drawn to the thrill of risk, Whelan began gambling, enticed by the unpredictable allure of cards and dice. Soon, his debts spiraled out of control, exacerbated by poorly thought-out investments. Desperation drove him to borrow $30,000 from his wealthy uncle, a sum he hoped would cover his losses and give him a fresh start. But Whelan’s luck didn’t change; his wagers backfired, and he lost everything again. When his family refused to bail him out and left him to face the consequences alone, Whelan knew he was out of options.
In 1895, Whelan made a desperate decision: he fled England, leaving behind his wife, his family, and The Remnants of his former life. Homeless and destitute, he found himself adrift in the slums of East London, where he experienced hardship beyond anything he’d ever known. Stripped of his wealth, he was forced to survive on his own wits and skills. Luck struck when a small gang took him in, a group that saw past his tattered clothes and recognized a potential asset in his scientific knowledge. They taught him basic street medicine—how to dress wounds, ease fevers, and mix crude remedies—skills that proved invaluable in the brutal environment of London’s underbelly.
Whelan’s life took another dark turn in 1898 when a fire engulfed the tenement buildings where his gang resided. The blaze, believed to be set by either his vengeful uncle or a rival gang, ravaged the lives of his newfound family. Whelan, by chance, was absent that night, but the loss left him hollow. Alone once again, he attempted to reach out to his family for support, but they shut their doors on him, and his wife, Edith, refused to hear his pleas.
With nothing left to lose, Whelan left England behind in 1901, making his way to the distant shores of New Alexandria. There, he found kinship among the Ashen, a gang whose values resonated with his newfound outlook on life. Whelan used his chemistry background to create simple but effective remedies for the gang, from healing concoctions to smoke bombs, quickly proving his worth. The Ashen, impressed by his skills and loyalty, offered him protection, effectively shielding him from the far-reaching influence of his uncle. With The Ashen, Whelan had found a place to belong.
However, the shadow of his past still looms. The Ashen’s protection is not guaranteed, and whispers of his uncle’s anger and his wife’s spite occasionally reach his ears.
