Abuse of Game Mechanics
This post serves as an official guide on the Abuse of Game Mechanics (AGM), which falls under the FailRP umbrella. The purpose of this post is to clearly define what constitutes an abuse of game mechanics, outline expectations and ensure we maintain the high quality of roleplay on Wild West RP.
Wild West RP is first and foremost a roleplay-first server. Mechanics exist to support roleplay - not replace it, bypass it or provide unfair advantages.
What is Abuse of Game Mechanics?
Abuse of Game Mechanics is a term that refers to when a player uses a game feature or mechanic to override restrictions, avoid consequences, or gain a mechanical advantage in a way that the system itself was not meant to allow or designed to provide. If you are using a mechanic in a way that overrides restrictions or gains you a mechanical advantage in a situation, it is likely an abuse of game mechanics.
Examples of an Abuse of Game Mechanics
The following list includes (but is not limited to) examples of what is considered to be an abuse of game mechanics:Combat and Survival
- Abusing peyote to absorb damage (Peyote is for hallucination roleplay purposes only)
- Eating food or drinking water during an active fight.
- Using healing items that restore core health during an active hostile situation.
- Using first-person camera to gain a movement advantage during an active hostile situation.
- Using the ragdoll mechanic to avoid being hogtied.
- Using the Create Action or X-Menu to place props to gain access to otherwise inaccessible or locked locations.
- Using the ragdoll mechanic to gain access to otherwise inaccessible or locked locations.
- Entering instanced locations or locations that require a teleport in order to escape conflict. (Including speak-easies, the Grand Korrigan, Hotel Rooms, etc.)
- Abusing lasso or gun mechanics (use of lasso and breakout mechanics is expected to be used in a reasonable and realistic way. Using them in spammy or unrealistic ways is an abuse of the mechanic. This applies to gun animations, also)
- Using the outfit menu "on the go" in unrealistic locations (clothing changes should occur somewhere that makes sense - such as hotel rooms, clothing stores, or after roleplaying taking clothes from saddlebags.)
- Using delivery mechanics to spawn a free wagon without any intention of participating in the delivery.
Use Common Sense
We have an incredible Development Team that works tirelessly to create features that enrich the roleplay and gameplay experience. From time to time, mechanics may have unintended uses or oversights. When that happens, we expect players to use common sense. Before using a mechanic in a questionable way, ask yourself:
- Is this the intended use of the mechanic?
- Am I using the mechanic to bypass a restriction?
- Am I using the mechanic to avoid consequences?
- Am I gaining an advantage because of how the system functions, rather than through roleplay?
- Would staff reasonably view this as circumventing a limitation?
If you are unsure whether something is an abuse of game mechanics, submit a Support Ticket before attempting it in-game. Staff are more than willing to clarify.
Disciplinary Action
Abuse of Game Mechanics falls under the FailRP umbrella. Players who intentionally abuse mechanics or exploit features will face disciplinary action, which may include Official Warnings, Warning Points, Suspensions and Bans. We take the abuse of game mechanics seriously because it undermines fair roleplay and damages community trust. Now, go have fun!
We implore all of our players to consider what they are doing when using features and mechanics and ensure that you are putting your best food forward in their use. At the end of the day, while we're all about roleplay and we need to keep that at the forefront of our minds while we're on the server, we also need to make sure that what we're doing on the server is realistic and doesn't circumvent limitations or provide us with an unfair advantage, so that everyone remains on a level and fair playing field. Now get off the forums and enjoy some roleplay!
