  • Description

Lewis is somewhat androgynous, but identifies as male. He dresses in a modern, 20th century style. A kind of new-age, practical shiek.
Underneath every inch of those clothes one can find some kind of tattoo or other, each nautical in theme.
Hair that shines like Poseidon's crown, eyes that recall the Mediterranean sea.
Usually smells like fruity soap and iodine.

    Early Life

Lewis Loveless was not born a man, but he was born to be a man.

On May 5th of 1880, Leah Edwards was born in New Bedford Massachusetts to Charles Edwards and Nancy Edwards. A working-class family, Charles was a carpenter who made more than decent dollar building docks and ships across Massachusetts bay. At this time, there was no richer port in all the world than New Bedford, due to whalers and sailors making it their home and hub. As her father worked building ships, repairing hulls, and maintenancing docks, Leah found herself strangely drawn to those waters off Massachusetts bay. She’d spend most days at the dock with Charles, watching the sailors as they worked, thinking all the while of how romantic a life it must be. To stand boldly against the forces of nature, to weather the storm and dare the leviathans, to do all that and still come back to port laughing with your wages in hand, it seemed to Leah like the most ideal life one could wish for. Furthermore, she saw much of herself in those seafarers. Were they not like her once? Just children sat at the dock, wishing they could one day roll with a vessel over the horizon?

Of course, there was one outward difference which separated her from those mariners. For as much as she was drawn to water, Leah was a girl defined by her fire. Like the sailors of New Bedford, she was rough, tough, and surly, hardly the type to fall in with her peers. If this were not enough, she had grown larger than any girl she knew, and while her younger sister Sophie looked very much like their mother, Leah’s features were unmistakably from her father. All of this together made her both physically and spiritually hearty.

But a lady, no matter how hearty, would never be accepted onto the charter of a whaling ship. This was most painful of all to Leah, as she couldn’t say she felt much like the lady they expected her to be. She was equally comfortable in workman’s trousers and skirts, and far less annoyed by caps than she was bonnets. She had never thought of chores in terms of "feminine" work either, equally able to help with her father’s carpentry as she learned proper cooking, and other forms of homemaking. To her mind, they were equally important, and mutually valuable. While she had domestic aspirations, a young Leah was far too free a spirit to be domesticated, and instead felt the call of adventure deep in her heart and soul, all the way into her young adulthood. While she couldn’t board a ship herself and sail the seas as she might wish to, she could at least continue to hang around the life she so desperately wanted. As sailors regaled her with stories of high adventure on the open waves, her yearning, and frustration, only grew.

Little to her knowledge, Leah’s wishes would be granted, but with fortune came tragedy. In early 1897, Charles Edwards would suffer a fatal accident at work, leaving the Edwards' family destitute. With no income, their expenses could only pile up. With a brittle mother and a baby sister, Leah knew she would have to take charge. As taxes threatened to take their home, Leah looked towards the sea once more. There, as always, were the sailors, all rich with their wages. With newfound determination, Leah knew what she had to do.

With strange hair and odd clothes, a dubious man approached a boatswain recruiting sailors for a whaling expedition. When asked his name, this uncertain man replied: “Lewis Edwards.”

Thus, Leah stepped off the docks of New Bedford, and Lewis came aboard the whaling ship "Lady 8", on the strict condition that a portion of his wages would be sent back home to his mother.

For the first of his years, Lewis was assigned to the average amateur roles aboard any ship. Tending sails, rigging, keeping watch, the usual duties of a fresh-at-sea lad. As he grew his sea-legs and settled into the work, Lewis was beginning to excel as a deck-hand, to no small notice of his captain. In this first year, Lewis saw more of the world than ever, and was exactly as excited about it as he thought he'd be. That crackling fire in his gut had never felt so bright. Life aboard the Lady 8 had spurred him into thriving, making him the greatest version of himself yet. He was at last free.

In his second, third and fourth years, Lewis was entrusted with the duty of boatsteering, becoming an accomplished harpooneer. It was in the second year he earned his name. Motivated by the thought of his family back home, Lewis gained a reputation for brutality when fighting whales. Refusing to let even the smallest prize go, his crewmates began calling him by a nickname. "Loveless Lewis," eventually settling on simply, "Loveless".

In his fifth year at sea, Lewis was more content than ever. He was reassured that his family was alright in Massachusetts, living well off the wages he sent home. He had finally captured that romantic ideal of a sailor. Able to shrug off even the fiercest of storms, capable of battling sea-monsters, and having seen so much of the natural world, he could finally say he felt like the man he had always wanted to be.

No ship sails forever, though, and before Lewis could take a sixth year aboard the Lady 8, she made port for the very last time. Lewis, while saddened, wasn’t entirely upset at the loss. After all, while he still believed the water to be his home, he couldn’t help but think while on the ocean that there must be high adventure on dry land as well. Surely there were great things waiting to be discovered here too? Excited at the idea, Lewis ordained it time to shake the salt out of his soul and let his heart dry. Maybe it was time he let the sea-giants rest, and instead discover the wonders of the 3rd day. Having boarded Lady 8 Lewis Edwards, he now departed her Lewis Loveless.

Carrying his modest bag of belongings, he looks to a metal sign overhead nestled between two tall brick buildings. While he doesn’t read so well, he can make out the words.

    “WELCOME TO SAINT DENIS”.

    Present Life

Lewis is blown away by New Alexandria. All those years of looking after his luck and keeping himself in fortune's favor have lead to this providence, this promised land.
Lewis arrived in New Alexandria on Febuary 8th, amazed by the splendor of Saint Denis. It was a city of the future, a 20th century monument. Lewis hadn't set foot in America for a long while, and this was a great way to dive back in to the land of the free. He has one anxiety though, how will it accept Lewis. With shipmates going home, or otherwise back out to sea, he was left with no connections, just himself and his sailor duds. Clothes he was most comfortable in. A shirt that was just a little too loose, and a coat just a little too thick. The way Lewis sees it, without this coat, "it" would be "obvious". Despite the humidity and heat, he won't shed his safety blanket.

Asking around where he might find a fresh meal (he's not picky, anything beats ship's biscuits) he found that he had arrived on the same day as a beer garden. Unsure what that is, by enticed by the promise of free beer, he followed the path to this community party. Upon arriving, he meets a man who would become a great friend. A man named Flynn Delaney, who was more than friendly, filling Lewis in on some local customs and the peculiarities of New Alexandria. This was a crucial first step in Lewis's journey into the State, as this hospitality set the stage for what was to come.

After spending a month in New Alexandria, Lewis decides he'd make it home. He'd met too many friends, and grown far too attached to follow through with his plans to move back to Massachusetts. Instead, he planted roots in New Alexandria, and went looking for a new purpose.

Lewis found his latest stride in studying medicine, inspired to become a doctor. He firmly planted himself on the state of New Alexandria as a proficient, educated, working resident.
