Early Life

Kragen was born into a single-mother household; his father Shawn Hurst had left him before he was born. As a result, Kragen holds a deep hatred for his father, and attempts made by his father are promptly thrown out by Kragen and spat back in his face. Kragen did not grow up with much and spent most of his childhood on the streets, causing chaos, stealing food, pickpocketing, and getting into fights with his good friends Conrad and Karl. The three of them felt unstoppable as kids getting up to endless amounts of shenanigans, but it had to end when the real world hit Kragen with the passing of his mother, and he had to start making money and work full-time at the age of fifteen.

Kragen and his cousin Robert were also pretty close in their youth, seeing each other a few times a year for prolonged periods. Often, Robert would get involved in Kragen and Conrad's shenanigans.


Kragen worked from 1895 to 1901 at the Mugiemoss Paper Works. This work was gruelling hard factory labour, and in February of 1901, just before his travels to New Alexandria, Kragen partook in and partially led part of the strikes as an effort to try and get more pay. The strikes led to much of the workforce, including Kragen, being laid off. Kragen, disgruntled and out of a job, decided to spend the remainder of his wages he had left on a boat to New Alexandria, along with his best friend Conrad Llyod, to get a taste of the America dream.
