    Early Life

    ‎‏‏‎ ‎

    ‎‏‏‎ ‎
Philippe "Lip" Marius Alexandre Darmon was born in a small village in south-eastern France.

    Childhood in Provence

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎His father, Marius Barnabé Darmon was from a very wealthy land owners family in Provence, and his mother, Estelle Benduran, was a singer from Alsace.
Marius was initially destined to an arranged marriage but he fell in love with Estelle when he was invited to a rendition of La Traviata by her traveling troupe of singers. He decided to go against his family's wishes and married Estelle. This caused an irreversible break between him and the rest of the Darmon family.
The two lovebirds decided to run away and bought a small farm in a remote village in Provence, where they made an honest if quite modest living growing crops and handling cattle.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Philippe's early life was peaceful. An only child, he was raised roman catholic, school being provided by the local priest in the village's church. He would spend most of his days hiking the beautiful limestone mountains around the village, more often than not skipping school to do so. When he wasn't escaping or learning he would work at the farm with his parents. He was a generally reserved and skittish boy.

His mother Estelle, formerly an artist and thus literate in music, would make a point to visit the Marseille opera as often as possible with her son and often uncooperative husband, Marius. This made Philippe develop a fascination for music and especially opera, his favourites being Mozart's Don Giovanni and Bizet's Carmen. His mother would also often sing either to herself or for Philippe to fall asleep.

Due to new reforms on taxation, the Darmons saw their farm seized by the state and were evicted with no recourse. Now homeless, they used what little money they had left to board one of the very last sailboats in Toulon, the Saint Sébastien, bound for America.

    Travelling to America

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎The 6 weeks trip along the Mediterranea, up the western coast of France, and across the Atlantic, turned out to be an ordeal for the Darmon family.
Being confined in a ship was difficult for Philippe as he longed for the outdoors and sights of Provence. This made him extremely irritable and he would seek to isolate himself as much as possible. He would also tend to talk back which got him in trouble with other passengers and members of the crew. This earned him the nickname "Lip" which would later turn out to be his legal name while immigrating to the United States.
In the second week, Estelle, Lip's mother, went down with tuberculosis and passed away within a few days. Her last rites were performed by a chaplain from Tuscany, all in italian, and she was given a burial at sea to avoid risks of contagion to other passengers. Her passing caused father and son to grow very distant, overwhelmed by their respective grief.

They would disembark a few weeks later in Saint Denis, New Alexandria. They were processed by an immigration officer who couldn't understand their accent and would write Philippe's name as "Lip" on all his legal immigration documents.

    Settling in Saint Denis

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎It was difficult for Marius and Lip to settle into their new life in America.
Marius got hired as a construction and maintenance worker at the Saint Denis railway company. With this stable if modest income, they were able to move into a small house in the slums of the city. Marius' job was difficult and the loss of his wife would make him resort to drinking heavily. His temper would often flare up. Lip spent as much time as possible outside to avoid catching the blunt of his father's moods when he was drunk.

Even before becoming a widower, Marius had always been known for his unexpected mood swings. One of Lip's earliest memories was a particular episode of his father having drunk himself to a near-stupor and being berated by his mother for it, proceeding to push her out the door, forcing her to sleep outside for the night. He could turn violent in the blink of an eye. This made Lip develop a reflex of flinching and covering his face when tones get heated around him, a habit he has yet to grow out of to this day.
Marius' justification for his violent and often unjustified outbursts towards his spouse and child was a chilling one: "beat them even if you don't know why - they'll know".

At the end of spring 1901, Marius died in an accident on the railway bridge west of Saint Denis. His remains were fished out of the river and a small funeral was held in the Saint Denis cemetary, using up what little money he had managed to accumulate.

    Present Life

    ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎

Lip's life in New Alexandria could be used as a typical example for the American Dream.
He often attributes his success to the "Land of Opportunity" and sheer luck.

    Street Rat

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ After his father's passing, and unable to find a job to afford rent, Lip was evicted and ended up living in the streets of Saint Denis.

Due to his skittish nature, he would spend most of his time actively avoiding people. When he wasn't hiding on the roofs and watching people walk in the streets below, he'd pick pockets, steal from the general store, or beg for money to survive.
The roof above the gun store was his prefered sleeping place.

The life of a petty criminal wasn't for Lip.
A devout catholic, he was torn between his need to survive and his will to follow his faith. This conundrum would make him develop a tendency for self-deprecation and a complete lack of confidence.

    Frog Boy

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎By chance, as he was begging in Courtenay Street, he met a man who would take it upon himself to teach the boy how to fend for himself. He gave him a knife and a fishing rod and taught him how to use them.
Lip would turn out to become quite proficient at hunting frogs and other smaller animals in the Bayou. He was often trying to sell the cooked herptile meat to anyone he met which earned him the nickname "frog boy".

This is when he first met Jacco Vinke. The two first came across each other in an alley. Lip, seeing a lot of himself in the freshly arrived dutchman and always chasing the promise of a tip, took it upon himself to show him around the city. Jacco would take advantage of Lip's naiveté and try to rob him at gunpoint. An unlikely friendship stemmed from that situation and the two remain very close to this day.
The two men would sometimes frequent The Four Horsemen Saloon, then owned by Cosmo Kray as he was named at that time. This is where Lip got his fortune read by Kincaid Faraway (the rabbit, the trail, the horseshoe, and the wolf were the cards he drew), an event that he brings up often to this day.

The frenchman offered to sell frogs legs to The Four Horsemen Saloon, which Cosmo (as he was named at that time) accepted.

One day, completely out of the blue - Lip would later learn impulsivity was a very defining trait of his -, Cosmo offered Lip a ride to Valentine and back (as Lip didn't own a horse due to his fear of them back then) and a long conversation along the way, accompanied with Wyatt Connington. This would offer Lip very precious insight into the way people interacted in New Alexandria. A day-long adventure across the entire state ensued where Lip was shown how to shoot, taught how to deal with medical emergencies, introduced to most members of The Krays - some of which were very wary of him at first -, and finally offered a full time job as bartender. He hastily accepted and became Cosmo's employee.

    Bartender

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ At first considered a more-or-less temporary worker, seeing Lip behind the counter of the Four Horsemen quickly became a regular occurence.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎Working as a bartender for a gang-run saloon made Lip's life incredibly dangerous. Despite Cosmo constantly trying to push him away, he would always refuse to leave and pledge his allegiance once more to the man and his family, along with most other employees of the saloon at the time. This included Jacco Vinke who would join the saloon employees' ranks as a coach driver for Aiden Kray, and Tod Jones who would work as security.
Due to The Krays' various conflicts, the Four Horsemen employees would have to leave the city and go into hiding on a regular basis. No matter how often this happened Lip would never get used to it and would always be plagued by huge bouts of anxiety and fear.

The frenchman first had trouble asserting himself behind the counter but with the help of the family, the other employees, and under Cosmo's guidance, he would turn out to be quite proficient at conversation and service. He then realized that was his calling and that he enjoyed it tremendously.

As he was getting more and more acquainted with the Krays and their dealings - no matter how much he was kept in the dark or would actively avoid conversation, he was bound to pick up information unwillingly - three of their members decided they had to put his loyalty and courage to the test. This happened in the form of a staged kidnapping as they impersonated a rival gang of the Krays, picking Lip up at the apple orchard and bringing him to a remote location during a particularly foggy night.
They threatened him with firearms, attempting to push him into giving out names of the Krays. In this ordeal, Lip managed to only give out information that was already widely known in an attempt to prove his good will - he would turn out to be actually really good at lying despite his faith forbidding him to do so - and didn't buckle under the pressure even as he was convinced he was going to die.
This event would turn out to be quite traumatic for the frenchman as he had never been held at gunpoint before and the test being staged to appear as real of a threat to his life as possible. The words of his would-be executioner, "if you're no use to me, why would I let you live", would leave a deep mark on him.

He goes over some of the consequences of this event on his psyche in journal entry "à l'istint" (dated october 7th 1901).

As a result of this traumatic event, Lip would develop a form of anxiety tremors syndrome, or shaky hands, that still plagues him to this day.

As fate would have it, his closest actual brush with death at that point came from a very unexpected place...

Working the counter of the Four Horsemen made Lip meet lots of different, interesting people - at this particular point notably a man introducing himself as Jim Davis, a travelling merchant of health tonics. Davis was in fact a con man looking for his next mark. After a little back and forth with Lip, he decided the frenchman would be perfect as an accessory for his next grift - being so incredibly gullible and inspiring sympathy.

He attempted to manipulate Lip into joining him in his travels across state but Cosmo Kray suspected him of being part of the Brotherhood. He interrogated him with the help of Aiden Kray. This put Jim Davis in a precarious position, on top of being confronted by Apollo Alovich about his so called strength tonics and their compositions. Apollo saw right through the snake oil merchant and warned Lip to stay away from him.

Enough time passed for Lip to lower his guard when Davis struck next. On the opening day for the Summerhouse, he manipulated Lip into giving him a ride on his mule to Lagras to lure him away from the city and the protection of the family. Then, he threatened him with a weapon and made him take them to a remote location. They met several people along the way, including Silas Winchester and Fred Foster, but Davis had warned Lip that he would kill him if he opened his mouth, so no one was aware that a kidnapping was happening right under their nose.
Davis then locked himself and Lip in an isolated house and started a soliloquy aimed at manipulating Lip to leave the Krays and join him to travel the country to sell his elixir. His ego had pushed him to try and perfect the composition to make an actual strength elixir but his very limited knowledge of medicine and herbs had him brew various kinds of poisons, going around state, snatching people up, having them try it, and leaving them on the side of the road when they would inevitably get sick or die.
Lip initially refused but Davis' insistence pushed him to drink from the foul vial. The frenchman obviously passed out, succumbing to a coughing fit, unable to vomit - a medical oddity of his - which pushed the con artist into a panic. Davis grabbed Lip's almost-lifeless body and dropped him on a roadside, as was his regular MO.

Lip was picked up by a local doctor and very superficially treated at the Rhodes medical tent where he regained consciousness and escaped, spurred on by the fear of having people worry about him. Now without memory of the events leading up to him being poisoned, he happened to meet Silas Winchester again at the telegram station. The man offered to treat him, gave him charcoal - effectively saving his life on the spot. He then offered to bring him to Saint Denis.

A comprehensive telling of events directly following this ordeal can be read in journal entry "à l'embruni" (dated september 27th 1901).

    Manager

‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ As more Businesses got absorbed into the Four Horsemen brand, it became necessary for Cosmo to nominate managers. The Four Horsemen Saloon first shift was entrusted to Lip who initially refused, fearing the burden of responsibilities. It took a little more convincing for him to finally accept.
Unable to count properly and with no idea of what running a business entailed, Lip was taught arithmetic and the basics of business by Lars Stefan who he regarded as a father figure. He would often seek out his guidance and his opinion regarding business decisions.
With Lars' help and the support of his friends and fellow employees Agatha Baumstumpf, Boyd Langston, Echo Wolfe, Javier DeLaCruz, Vera Foxx, Alexander Crane, and Brath Macwell, the saloon started thriving.‎‎

Tragedy struck when Aiden Kray passed away in an extremely violent and unexpected manner. This event would push Cosmo Kray onto a path of mental instability that made it hard for Lip to keep up. Despite this, the frenchman kept dutifully by Cosmo's side as much as he could. The passing of Aiden Kray and the manner of which it happened made Lip reconsider his own relationship with his father. Right before Aiden's funeral, he visited his own father's grave for the first time, as a way to finally put a complex relationship and old grudges to rest.
To this day, he is sometimes seen visiting Marius' grave in the Saint Denis cemetery when he needs some time for himself, to think, or when he feels too overwhelmed.

At this point, every day brought a new conflict. The Four Horsemen employees had to leave town on a semi regular basis to avoid the old grudges of gangs towards its owner, Cosmo Kray.

During an outing on Guarma where Cosmo was particularly deranged, Lip was given yet another out. Cosmo pulled him aside and tried to convince him to leave and start his life anew somewhere else. Once more, Lip refused. This angered Cosmo, who was already quite unstable at that point, and he pointed his gun at him to try and push him away for good - or maybe to end the boy's life. Lip didn't budge. Cosmo ultimately decided against shooting the frenchman and in a very unexpected turn of events, he instead made him take a blood oath.
Lip, feeling like this would lend his unwavering loyalty an added legitimacy, didn't hesitate for a second. He repeated every word of the oath and followed all of the instructions, including getting his left palm slightly cut with a knife, his blood mixed with that of Cosmo's, and an offering being made to the Sun for protection (his knife).

    "I, Lip Darmon
Swear till death takes my soul
To stand loyal and firm by the side of the family
    To never betray
    And never sway
To listen and protect with all that I am
I swear to bring no harm body or soul
And to never betray the secrets of Mother, our sun"
The Blood Oath taken by Lip on Cosmo's instructions
    Guarma, october 24th 1901

Ever respectful of the faith of others in relation to his own, Lip didn't feel like this oath would take away from his catholic convictions. To this day, he upholds these principles in accordance with those of his view of the Bible and considers the subsequent scar in his left palm as a physical contract with Cosmo and, more generally, a reminder to keep to his own word.

Lip would later recall this particular event and ponder his view on it while struggling with his perceived subsequent abandonment in journal entry "Au fuòc" (dated december 7th 1901).

Things soon spiralled out of control.

Cosmo's behavior and addictions becoming entirely impossible to deal with and pushing him onto a path of absolute destruction, he had to take a leave of absence out of state to deal with those issues, leaving right after Aiden Kray's funeral.

Cosmo being then unable to run the Four Horsemen as a whole, he passed the full ownership and license on to Lip.

    Owner

‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎At first extremely reluctant to take the business over, and debilitatingly crippled by severe impostor syndrome, Lip soon started growing more confident in his vision as a business owner thanks to the support of his friends and employees.
The early days of ownership were very rough on Lip. Cosmo's absence was made that more difficult to deal with that he was being constantly confused with him by customers, and not a day would pass without someone asking him to fetch Cosmo in order to talk to him. These constant reminders would severely impact Lip who began developping unhealthy coping mechanisms such as functional alcoholism, overworking, or just plain denial.

The saloon was also sometimes the target of either the former owner's old enemies or just your average deranged criminal.

One such enemy happened to be a street rat who, after being shown hospitality and pity by Lip, attacked Lars, marking him permanently in the process. The guilt resulting of this event and Lip's inability to pull the trigger when faced with a life-threatening situation furthered his crippling self doubts and anxiety. By explaing these events to a letter to Cosmo, he would inadvertantly cause him to make an unexpected return of dubious legality before he was completely rehabilitated.

Another of those enemies who took quite the liking in tormenting the Horsemen was one of Cosmo's brothers, Orion Cotton. Unstable and violent, Orion would openly attack the saloon and its members a total of three times in targeted harassment, intimidation, or just plain violent ways.

After having shot at or stabbed most current or former members of the Horsemen, Orion set his sight on Lip. He shot him in the gut, nearly killing him. This was the first time Lip was ever shot and once again, his inability to pull the trigger first to save his life would sow even more doubts in his mind.
Lip goes over this event in journal entry "à l'oumbro" (dated november 15, 1901).

After a particularly difficult day of threats and dangers, Lip received an anonymous telegram of someone pretending to be Knut Easthouse and wanting to meet up at the Saint Denis cemetery. The relationship between the Horsemen and Knut being somewhat tense, Lip assumed the Norwegian was trying to make peace. He sneaked out of the Four Horsemen Saloon and went on his own.
At the cemetery he was instead met by Jeremia Walker pointing a gun at him and demanding to know where Lars Stefan was, invoking Lars owing him $250. Scared for his life and not knowing Lars' current location, Lip proposed to reimburse the debt himself in exchange for his freedom. Just as Jeremia accepted those terms, a masked man showed up behind him with a gun pointed at his head.
This man, later revealed to be "Honest John" Williams, was a then petty criminal in search of greater renown across the state. He proceeded to disarm both men and rob Jeremia of his money. After sending Jeremia away, he then turned to Lip who just so happened to not have any money on him. This put John in front of a conundrum: if he let the young man go he felt his reputation would be negatively impacted. He then proceeded to introduce himself, apologize, and finally shoot Lip in the lung on the right side, leaving him for dead in the now deserted cemetery.
Presumably hearing the gunshot from afar, Jeremia returned to the cemetery (or maybe never left) and immediately brought Lip to the medical office to try and save his life. There, he was met by Alexander Crane who immediately operated on the frenchman, treating a severely collapsed lung that almost cost the young man his life. Lip was then in a coma.

To everyone, all evidences pointed towards Jeremia being responsible for Lip's condition: just before meeting with Lip, he happened to have sent a telegram to Lars threatening his "friends" if he didn't settle his debt. He was the only witness of this whole affair since, obviously, Honest John was nowhere to be found. Jeremia's reputation as an unstable and dangerous man also cemented his guilt in the general opinion's eyes.

Lip awoke a few days later and happened to suffer a mild form of amnesia due to his condition. It would take a few more days to reconstruct the entire chain of events.
He was informed that during his coma, Lars and Cosmo had orchestrated a form of public trial where they were ready to lynch Jeremia at Timothy O'Boyle's Tequila Tuesday. Upon realizing that the two were ready to publically execute a man for him, Lip became extremely angry. The prospect of a man being killed on his behalf was unacceptable to him, guilty or not, and even moreso when it turned out Jeremia was in fact innocent. This created a violent divide between the men which culminated in a shouting match between Lip and Lars on Milyonne Avenue in Saint Denis.
The frenchman, desperate for a modicum of control over the consequences of his near-demise, decided to fully trust that the law would handle the case, find the real attempted murderer, and punish him fairly. This would turn out to be a mistake as even after John was caught he was first released on bail and later took a plea deal - he was only made to serve 70 months in Sisika for his crime. Despite assuring people that he's okay with this verdict to this day, this experience made Lip fall back onto his habits of mild distrust of authority and would push his morals back towards a more grey area, feeling the justice system ultimately failed him even though he entirely trusted it.
Trial references: 1901-CM-126 "State of New Alexandria v. John Williams".

After the trial, having cleared his name, Lip made peace with Jeremia and stood his ground when the gunslinger reiterated his wish for the debt to be settled. He allowed him back at the saloon, after all he owed him his life.

A period of grace would occur after all this where Lip would settle into a sort of routine running the saloon and going on outings with friends. This allowed him to develop relationships and his business, as well as slow down his tendency to functional alcoholism.

    Venture Capitalist

Unexpectedly, Cosmo quietly made his way back into Lip's life at the beginning of the year 1902.

He was very reluctant to get involved in the Four Horsemen at first, but on Lip's gentle insistence (in the form of being told that he is always welcome and part of the Horsemen ad nauseam), he slowly became more acquainted with the saloon and its unique ecosystem again.

Things became oddly familiar after this. Cosmo would often visit, staying out of the way due to being easily overwhelmed by crowds and sounds. This unexpected return made Lip incredibly happy and inspired him to expand his work.

Under Lip's guidance, the Saloon soon became more of a conglomerate than a drinking establishment. It opened several branches of business under contract, drafted by Lip himself. The contract's terms were as follows: while under contract with the Four Horsemen brand, the manager could focus on handling their event or business with the help of Lip. Employees salaries would be paid in full by Lip, and all profits made after deducted charges (subcontractors costs, stock acquisitions, etc) would receive a 25% tax to go into the Horsemen brand account for further financing of salaries.
This contract proved not very lucrative for the brand but it was an excellent incentive for employees to start their passion project with a strong financial backing and business/accounting help.

One of Lip's defining traits being always wanting to help, when a desperate, just out-of-Sisika Billy Chaucer knocked on his door, he felt compelled to move mountains to assist the man in rebuilding himself. First he hired him as a bartender at the saloon. The artist's thirst for performative arts but lack of funds was quickly picked up on by Lip - he naturally decided to help him start his own project of a theatre company. Lip didn't consider himself much of an artist so he left the artistic side to Billy, focussing on helping him financially and with networking as well as offering his support in person during all of Billy's performances he could attend.
A natural friendship stemmed from this situation between the two.

Completely unexpectedly, the relationship between Echo and Lip suddenly took a very serious turn. Up until then, Lip being completely clueless when it came to romance if it wasn't sung in italian with a full orchestra, their relationship was a very platonic romantic one not unlike those of courteous love from medieval times whose poetry Lip is so fond of. He was faithful to Echo without ever having kissed him. They would however often profess their feelings for one another.
Lip's tender feelings for Cosmo were difficult on Echo, no matter how romantic (or lack thereof) they would turn out to be. Indeed after Cosmo's second departure, Lip vowed to stop entertaining any sort of romantic feelings towards Cosmo - a maneuver that would turn out to be much trickier than anticipated, but denial being another defining trait of Lip he would probably never even recognize his lingering feelings for Cosmo (or lack thereof ?) if they pointed a gun at his face.
Echo's way of coping with it included drinking - a very sore subject for Lip due to his alcoholic father's tendency to beat him senseless and Cosmo's emotional abuse while under the influence. Feeling incredibly responsible for Echo's suffering and the bottle-involving symptoms they caused, Lip unconsciously put some amount of distance with Echo - wether he was trying to protect Echo or himself is anyone's guess.
Seemingly out of the blue - the truth being that Lip is just extremely bad at picking up on things even if they're plainly explained - Echo asked for Lip's hand in marriage in early february. This took the frenchman completely off guard and induced a downward spiral of inner conflict. He was terrified of trapping Echo in a relationship that caused him so much anguish he had resorted to alcohol.
Lip turned down Echo's proposal and vowed to stay as far away from anything romantic for the rest of his life for fear of causing more distress in partners.

His passion for work and his fierce dedication to the saloon then pushed him to join the Committee of Business, spearheaded by then Secretary of Business Sasha Stroganov.

As Billy Chaucer's theatrical projects kept advancing, a dispute started between Lip and him regarding things happening around the city. Lip's approach to problems in Saint Denis has always been to directly refer them to whoever was more competent to deal with them as he is not a good shot nor a particularly brave person. Suspecting a Four Horsemen employee of running an opium ring under the noses of the local authorities, Billy Chaucer was very insistent on taking the matter into his own hands. Lip strongly discouraged him from doing so, especially during business hours of the Four Horsemen, for fear of bringing the business down into illegal struggles like it was often involved in during the Krays days. Billy took this as Lip dismissing him completely and treating him like a child, and this would push him into a huge tantrum that caused a rift between the two men. Billy quit his job at the Four Horsemen then, much to Lip's chagrin and the rest of the employee's disdain. This however would not stop Lip from continuing to fund Billy's theatre troupe through the Horsemen account, thinking that the pursuit of the arts was more important than petty disputes between two individuals.
That episode caused a lot of ripples in the Horsemen community, some feeling Lip had been treated wrong by Billy.
Time would pass and things would settle between the two men, Lip confessing he was never really mad at Billy. The actor would go on to gravitate around the Horsemen again without being an employee.

A few weeks later, as Cosmo was going through a very rough moment following the death of his dear horse Kayne and as such reliving his father's passing, Billy's lack of awareness when it came to social cues would once again be apparent.
Feeling compelled to help Cosmo work through his grief, Billy tasked him with carrying a heavy stone - a bold move some would say as Cosmo was suffering from near-debilitating brain damage at that point - symbolising the pain of his father's passing. This interesting coping technique was accompanied by a streak of letters written by Billy from the point of view of Aiden. His father being an extremely touchy subject for Cosmo, he demanded Billy cease this correspondence immediately as he felt it was disrespectful. Billy didn't pick up on Cosmo's insistence and kept going.
This pushed Cosmo into an extreme fit of anger that would result in three punches thrown at Billy at the Saint Denis telegram station. As it would later be found out, Billy had a dormant medical issue in his eye that would be triggered by the punches, as weak as they were, Cosmo still suffering from extreme brain damage. This sadly caused Billy's death and forced Cosmo into hiding.

An investigation was launched. A lot of elements were very difficult to reconcile and some of the witnesses weren't particularly cooperative, in combination with Cosmo's decision to go on the run - the entire experience putting the Horsemen and Lip through a lot of stress and a clear distrust for authorities. Indeed, due to Cosmo's past, the people in charge of the investigation were very adamant he was not only unrepentant but also that this was no accident. Despite Tod's efforts, Lip would revert back to his old ways of extreme distrust of the authorities, feeling like his statement had been used against Cosmo.

Cosmo would go on to turn himself in and be imprisoned in Sisika awaiting trial. Lip and the Horsemen made it a point to visit him as often as they could, Lip always making sure to bring sweets, cigarettes, supplies, and everything else that was allowed to alleviate the terrible experience for the young man.

In the end, due to a lack to traceability of evidence and Cosmo's obvious willingness to behave, a plea deal was reached and Cosmo was released after having served time. He would go on to change his name to Sonny Harris to get a fresh start, even going so far as to work at the saloon again.

Things were becoming tense and dangerous for the frenchman around Saint Denis. After a very long discussion under the governor's mansion gazebo, Lip was assured by Sonny that if things devolved any further he would be taken to safety.
After closing the saloon on a monday night, Sonny took Lip out of Saint Denis under the excuse of visiting Gale Harper in the coma ward of Blackwater. After they were done with the visit however, Sonny continued on towards the west.
Lip didn't realise at this point but he was effectively being kidnapped.
His access to telegrams and letters was almost entirely restricted. Sonny constantly kept an eye on him for his protection. They were only going to remote locations, keeping to themselves. This had a big impact on Lip, far away from civilization and judgement he allowed himself much more leeway. He goes over this experience in his journal entry "La Bello Estello" dated july 1902.
This experience changed Lip's outlook on his relationship with Sonny fundamentally. From a deep kinship, it evolved into fascination, bordering on unhealthy obsession. It didn't help that this obsession was mirrored tenfold in Sonny.
After a few days in isolation, Sonny finally relented and they made their way back to Saint Denis. Their bond would only deepen after that.

    Affiliations

    ‎‏‏‎ ‎

In a quite frankly unexpected development, Lip would turn out to be quite the socialite. This means that he'll get involved with a lot of different circles and people without ever being completely affiliated with them. The following list is non exhaustive and contains a few notable affiliations that had an impact on his development.

    The Four Horsemen Saloon

The Four Horsemen Saloon is a business situated in the Bastille Saloon on Frontier Street, Saint Denis, owned by Lip, taking after Cosmo Kray.

Impersonation Night at the Four Horsemen Saloon, 1901
Tintype - the Wyatt Connington Estate Collection

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Lip considers the employees of the Four Horsemen like his family, calling them "the Horsemen", a nickname coined by Cosmo. He feels responsible for them and will not hesitate to put his life on the line to protect them. This applies to current and former employees as well as a few regulars, whom he considers his closest friends.
He is extremely attached to the place as well as the business and will almost always be either working behind the counter or somehow doing something related to the business. That is why he can very rarely be found outside of Saint Denis.
One of the reasons he takes this business so seriously is that he feels it's his duty to give back to the city what it gave him, as the saloon (and its previous owner) was what got him out of the streets and no doubt an untimely death. Nothing makes him happier than people having a good time at the Four Horsemen and using the place as a reliable and safe spot to conduct business, meet new people, or just relax.
After so much time behind the counter, he still can't remember the register code to save his life.

    The Krays

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Without ever being a member of the Krays, Lip has always pledged a fierce loyalty to them, especially Cosmo and Aiden Kray.
Being of a very gentle, righteous nature, he never had quite what it takes to become a criminal - his worst crimes being petty theft to survive back in his street rat days and he still feels guilty about those to this day. This meant that he was always kept in the dark when it came to the Krays dealings and intrigues, being relegated to strictly employed at the saloon. Even with this divide in business and his almost complete ignorance of their occupations, Lip still considers the family as close friends and remains unwavering in his loyalty even to this day.

    The Syndicate of Spirits

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ The Syndicate of Spirits is a project first imagined by Timothy O'Boyle.
After Timmy's departure from the State, the project was entrusted to Lip who organized its first event in the month of March 1902.

The Saint Denis (and beyond) folks

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Operating a business in Saint Denis means Lip interacts often with people around the city, especially other business owners. His natural tendency for empathy makes him often go out of his way to help close to everyone he comes across. This has earned him a few strong lasting friendships along the way, as well as a lot of problems when giving his trust and sympathy to the wrong person.

    The Castillo

It is very difficult to explain the special bond between Lip and the Castillo. What started as an alliance of circumstances very quickly developped into earnest friendship based on mutual respect.
Lip was never a member of the Castillo or affiliated with any of their less open business, however a lot of his close friends are part of the italian family.
He was always adamant that all shady dealings were to be kept away from him, whether that is geographically (the saloon being considered neutral grounds) or personally (when a Castillo requests to talk to Lip, he will always ask first "is this about something I shouldn't know ?") - this was explicitly to avoid involving Lip in anything that would jeopardize the reputation of the Four Horsemen Saloon. Whether that justification is the real reason or whether Lip actually chooses ignorance and denial as a conscious effort is anyone's guess. It was always very complex to walk the line between knowing and not knowing for Lip, as most of his close friends are now deeply involved with the Castillo. Due to their mutual respect, Lip's sometimes exaggerated tendency to never want to cause any problems, and the knowledge that the italian family only has the best interest of the city of Saint Denis at heart, the Castillo and Lip have always had excellent relations. He considers all the family members as some of his most trusted friends and is always seen taking his hat off when Luca Castillo is in his vicinity as a sign of respect, something he tries to enforce in his saloon with his clocked-in employees.

    Trivia

    ‎‏‏‎ ‎

♘ Real name, Philippe, is pronounced so differently from the american version that the immigration officer wrote the only syllable he could make out. This means that officially in the US, "Lip" is his real, legal name.

♘ Mother tongue is an obscure dialect from southern France called Provençal. He learned French later on in school. To this day, he still writes his journal and most of his personal notes almost exclusively in Provençal.

♘ First name roughly translates to "the one who loves horses" in Latin. He happened to be terrified of horses when he first got into state.

♘ Favourite food is roasted frog's legs, which he eats on the daily.

♘ Despite their striking ressemblance and their common homeland, Agatha Baumstumpf and Lip aren't actually related by blood.

✎ Writing is incredibly sloppy due to the fact that he is a "shifted sinistral" or thwarted left-hander - born left-handed but forced to use his right hand when he was taught to write by a priest. On top of this his nervous nature will make him grasp the paper too hard and cause creases or to press several keys at once on the typewriter; the act of writing taking such a huge effort from him, he won't start over even if the page is barely readable. On top of all this his spelling of the English language is abysmal.

✎ Will almost always end his telegrams with "thank" even though he'll never make that grammar mistake when he speaks out loud.

✎ Will almost always spell names the way they would be spelled in French (e.g. "Macouelle" for Macwell, "Ouayatte" for Wyatt, "Cosmeau" for Cosmo, etc). This, on top of everything else, makes written correspondence with him quite difficult.

✙ Gets incredibly uncomfortable and tends to blush when in the presence of people showing skin (shirtless, etc), especially men. He will often hide his eyes in such occasions and justify this by : "this is Satan tempting me, I cannot sin" or something to that effect.

✙ Suffers from severe anxiety tremors syndrome (extremely shaky hands) whenever he's under pressure or his life is threatened.

✙ Very mild form of alcoholic neuropathy due to his mother's consumption of alcohol during pregnancy: after drinking a certain amount he will lose all feelings in his extremities.

    ✙ Physically unable to vomit.

(currently being diagnosed) Suffers from a very slow progressing nerve disease caused by his mother's alcoholism during pregnancy and his own rampant - if functional - alcoholism. There is no cure.

    Belongings

As he didn't own much in France and wasn't able to keep anything in his street rat days, Lip has developped a tendency to hoard whatever is given to him as if to catch up for lost time.

    Mounts

Now that he finally surpassed his terror of horses, Lip owns or has owned several mounts.

    Houpetta la Bella, the francophile
    ‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Houpetta la Bella
is a young, intelligent mule. Lip considers her one of his closest friends.
The two have developped a very strong bond, Lip being the mule's first handler, and Houpetta being his first mount. Lip took up the habit of singing silly french songs to calm his nerves while learning to ride which in turn has made the mule very receptive to music - and, some would say, French.
Houpetta is an extremely intelligent animal with a strong personality; the two found a compromise in their relationship with Lip never using the bridle or kicking the animal's side - instead telling her where to go in French, she will proceed at her own pace, choosing her own path. The only way she will go anywhere unfamiliar is by accepting to follow another horse that she actually likes. This makes riding anywhere outside of Saint Denis with her extremely difficult. Whether she actually understand French or learned to recognize Lip's tone with certain words would be difficult to determine - the frenchman just decided to believe the mule turned out to be a francophile.
Their entire relationship is based on compromise which makes Houpetta less of a vehicle and more of a companion.
She is now the guardian of all of the Four Horsemen Saloon stock: Alcohol, food, tools, and weapons.
Her name comes from a silly popular french song that tells the story of a young smuggler woman who would go up and down the mountain on her donkey carrying contraband tobacco and singing to herself.

    Icare, the brave
    ‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Icare
, french for "Icarus", is Lip's second mount, a gentle and patient appaloosa.
When Lip first visited the New Alexandria Marketplace, he happened to meet a man who owned a ranch that specialized in Appaloosas. A conversation ensued about the breed which piqued the frenchman's interest. He would later bring up the subject with the other Four Horsemen Saloon employees and Cosmo Kray would then bring him to Rhodes where he acquired the horse with his help.
Icare is an affectionate and brave animal. His courage makes him a great companion for expeditions outside of the city, whether it was first to hide from enemies of the Krays or now for hunting and fishing trips.
Naturally more of a solitary animal, Icare will tend to get more nervous when surrounded with other horses.
His name was chosen due to Cosmo Kray's involvement in acquiring the animal.

    Max, the bully
    ‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Max
was a tall black horse given to Lip by Cosmo Kray along with the ownership of the Four Horsemen Saloon. He was the first guardian of the saloon's stock.
Previously owned by Cosmo's former adoptive father, Max had a strong personality and would take advantage of Lip's gentle nature to bully him. He would try to kick him often and would take a bite at his bright red hair every time it got in his reach.
Terrified of Max's temperament, Lip would pass his ownership on to Evaline Sanderson who would no doubt have the required strong personality to handle the animal better than the frenchman.
To this day, Lip still has nightmares about his four-legged bully.

    Doba, the giant
    ‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Doba
, whose name translates to "no war" in Navajo, was a gift from Echo Wolfe who wanted a horse for Lip that would be "as red as possible", poking fun at the frenchman's tendency to blush extensively when given compliments or gifts.
Echo chose the name due to Doba being of the Ardennes breed, or a war horse.
Doba can be described as a gentle giant. He's a very patient and very tall and large horse. Even with his extremely large size, he has been observed to pace his movements down when around the frenchman, as if to make sure he wouldn't spook him.
When Lip sits on the saddle, the frenchman looks comically tiny - their jarring silhouettes always earning them a few chuckles along the way.
He is the guardian of the Four Horsemen Saloon's extra stock, to be used for special events.

    Pom Pomme, "Christmas is saved"
    ‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Pom Pomme
was a beautiful red chestnut arabian. Her name roughly translates to "apple-y apple" in French.
Due to a misunderstanding between Timothy O'Boyle and Nora Croft, the latter came to believe that the irishman would not only give her an arabian horse but would actually pay her to take the animal off his hands. Timmy would later actually sell the horse, much to Nora's dismay.
Lip learned of this quiproquo in the winter of 1901 and took it upon himself to find a replacement horse in order to "save Nora's Christmas". The horse being unavailable for purchase at state stables at the time, it took a few weeks of research until someone finally reached out.
Pom Pomme's previous owner, Evangelyne Dubois, explained her choice of name: "she looks like an apple".
The beautiful arabian was then offered to Nora Croft for Christmas 1901, much to her delight.
This is to date one of Lip's proudest achievements.

    Jam, the memory
‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Jam is a gorgeous black arabian horse. His first owner was Cosmo Kray.
The sight of Jam around the Four Horsemen Saloon was a very common one back in the Kray days, as Cosmo used to ride him around often. Wary at first, Lip ended up forming a sort of bond based on mutual respect with the animal whose temper could be really bad back then.
Jam was given by Cosmo to Lars, who put him up for auction at the Four Horsemen auctionhouse during its first event. Lip couldn't resist and bought him on a whim for $270, one of the only purchases he ever made with his salary at the Four Horsemen.
Now much more mellow, Jam is enjoying a quiet life with Lip. Who could have known that keeping away from stressful situations would change a horse's temper for the better ?
Due to his past trauma as a gang horse however, Jam will refuse to cross large bodies of water without being led. He’ll also immediately buck his rider off at the sound of gunshots, wolves, snakes, bears, cougars, and any other dangerous animals.

La Grenouille Rouge, the other half
‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎Rouge is a beautiful red Arabian mare. She came in a set of two beautiful Arabians, the other one “le Gros Loup”, having gone to Sonny. She was a gift from Bram Donners.
After a lengthy expedition out west with Bram Donners, Lip and Sonny accompanied him all the way to Tumbleweed where he discovered a passion for a gorgeous champagne coloured horse. The man was so starstruck, Sonny and Lip managed to convince him to buy the horse on the spot, pooling their money together for it. He named it “butter” due to its cream colour.
After Sonny survived a lengthy coma, Bram decided to organise another expedition with the two small men. He brought them all across state to get them these two arabian horses in a set. “La Grenouille Rouge” means “the Red Frog”, and “le Gros Loup” means “the Big Wolf”.

    Giving Nicknames

‎‎‏‏‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Out of a necessity (and an overabundance of caution due to the fact that it was all in a foreign, obscure dialect anyway) to avoid the possibility of authorities seizing Lip's personal journal and finding information about the Krays whereabouts and activities, he started giving people nicknames in Provençal when he wrote about them in said journal.

The following list is non exhaustive and ever expanding, some names are yet to be used in a journal entry.
